Bring an Underwater World to the Birthday Table

Create a cake worthy of an under-the-sea adventure with this Ariel cake decoration. Perched on her rock, Ariel makes a natural centrepiece for mermaid birthday cakes, giving cake makers a starting point for everything from a colourful ocean scene to a more subtle seaside design.

The secret to a convincing underwater cake is texture. Rather than relying on blue icing alone, try blending shades of aqua, turquoise and deep ocean blue around the sides of the cake. A palette knife or textured scraper can create the movement of water, while lighter blue and white details suggest bubbles and breaking waves.

From Coral Reefs to Sandy Shores

Ariel’s ocean setting opens up plenty of possibilities for decorating the rest of the cake. Use coloured sugarpaste to shape shells, starfish and pieces of coral, arranging them around the base or cascading down one side. Pink, lilac and peach add a coral-reef feel, while touches of pearl white create contrast against darker blues.

For a nautical twist, bring in a sandy beach effect using crushed biscuits on the cake board, with fondant shells scattered nearby. You could even add a little treasure chest or a trail of bubbles leading towards Ariel. These small details help tell a story without overcrowding the design.

Edible lustre dust is useful for adding a gentle sheen to shells and scales, while edible glue helps secure lightweight fondant decorations once you’re happy with their placement. If you’re working with buttercream, keep the larger details on the board or on small fondant plaques to give them a stable surface.

Leave some open space around Ariel so she remains easy to see, especially if you’re adding coral, waves and other sea-life details.
