Live Flowers

Adding live flowers to a cake is a great way of finishing your cake.

Flowers have always been used to decorate cakes however it must be done correctly to ensure that this is safe for the consumer.

Research

The first thing you need to do when thinking about adding flowers to your cake is researching if the flower is safe to use. Make sure that the flowers that you are using are not toxic. The last thing you want is to make your consumer sick! The ideal flower would be one that is completely edible however these can be difficult to find. When choosing which flowers to use, its always useful to know the colour scheme of the event and tie this in with the cake design.

The best place to start is to research which flowers are currently in season and look at your options. You want the freshest looking flowers for your design, especially if this is for a wedding or occasion.

Seal those ends

When using fresh flowers, the last thing you want when adding to your cake is that the fluids from the stem in your cake or icing (we can’t imagine that this tastes the best). What can you do to stop this from happening? Well, we can seal the ends! There are a number of different methods to stop those flowery fluids getting into your cake.

Flower pics

A simple way of sealing the end of flowers is to add a flower pic to your cake. Pop in the pic to the cake and add your flower into the pic.

Florist wire

Using florist wire is a popular option, simply wrap the stems tightly, leaving no gaps. You can use a hollow dowel or plastic straw to house the part of the flower that will be put into the cake. Having the added support makes it easier to slide the flower stem into the cake too!

Timing

Timing really is everything when it comes to fresh flowers. Try to leave stems in cold water until the very last minute for the freshest look.
